Adventures in cross cultural understanding

Did you know that the second highest ranking general in the US military is nicknamed “Hoss?”  Really. Fucking Hoss.  On top of which, he is a Marine, which is not terribly surprising.  There is a better than average chance that “Hoss” will be the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. That’s the role that Colin Powell won Best Supporting Actor for during the Gulf War.

You’ll recall that George Bush lost the Best Actor race that year to Norman Schwartzkopf.  Stormin’ Norman.  I reckon there is a precident for the nickname thing, but wouldn’t you think that these guys could come up with some damn thing better than “Hoss?”  I know we are not talking about the guys from the Harvard Lampoon here, but come on.  Surely there is some guy down in the signal corps who can come up with something decent.

I guess my worst fear is that Haley Barbour gets elected and starts drawling on about good old Hoss.  If Barbour said it, it would be almost impossible to discern if he were talking about the leader of the most powerful fighting force on earth or some mangey shetland the kept in the back for the grandkids.  If you think we have problems relating to the rest of the world right now, just wait until Foghorn Leghorn over in Mississippi gets a hold of the mic.
