I think I have been living near a vortex for too long. Yesterday when NPR reported that there is a planet out there made of diamond, my immediate thoughts were about the abundace of the universe and how we are all precious gems. Had I not been driving a company car, I would have vomited into the passenger’s seat in utter disgust at what I have become. A news story like that is supposed to get me thinking about how to get my hands on the booty, right?
Ok, I think about the booty enough already, and this diamond planet is like 40 light years away. I don’t know how many people miles are in 40 light years, but it is more than I could drive in a weekend. More even than I could drive over Labor Day weekend, although there would be a whole lot of other people getting in one last trip to Saturn before the end of the summer. Those people always clog up the road.
Instead I will consider the words of Brian May, the astrophysicist. You might recognize the name and think, “hey, the guitarist from Queen was also named Brian May! Isn’t that funny?” Well, yes and no because legendary guitarist Brian May is also Dr. Brian May, astrophysicist. His area of research is the tiny particles that result from the explosion of stars and make up planets and everything on them. In other words, we, the Earth, Saturn, all that shit are made of star dust. Like the diamond planet, we are children of the universe. Star Children. With diamonds on the inside.
