Take a big byte

I just bought a terabyte of data storage. It will be delivered to my house, left waiting at my doorstep, in a brown box. The driver will likely think nothing about bringing it up the driveway. He — or she — will have no idea that not all that long ago a terabyte meant something. Even five or six years ago it was more than most of us could conceive of needing.

Further back than that, my boy who was in the Navy and did radar stuff was on the ship one day when they wheeled on a gig of RAM for the system. With a forklift they wheeled it on. True, the system might not have been the newest in the Navy, but this was during the first Gulf War. That wasn’t all that long ago was it? Yes, ok , it was a while back.

Not as far as when my pops was first working with computers in a serious way. They all sat down at one point and studied all the tape machines they had in that one room. Turns out that when you put them all together, you got a whole gigabyte of data. A whole gigabyte! There are forty of those on the machine I’m using right now, and I can take this machine into the bathroom. Not the bath though.
