What in the world am I doing in Altamont this weekend? Why am I not in New York City for the 12th Annual Tartan parade? They probably do not have a run associated with this event. Even if they do, it probably would not occur in some muddy, nasty bit of woodland in the mists of the early morn. Long story short, I’m probably not missing a chance to for an epic kilt run. Nevertheless, I’d love to be on 6th Avenue at 2pm as the bagpipes blow the roof off 30 Rock.
It’s 8:30 right now, which means that, if I were to start driving this minute, I could be in New York sometime around 11:00 in the morning. That would give me just enough time to stop in at one of the ubiquitous Brew Burgers for their famous Pizza Burger before I strap on the sporran and represent Clan Sanuk. If this is truly going to work, I am going to need a Snowman to my Bandit.
In the dark days of early Sanuk, I made this trip with CaliTed as my Snowman. Or maybe he was my Sally Field (who was hot in “Smokey and The Bandit, by the way.) CaliTed and I were both single. We were both without plans for Thanksgiving. So we decided to drive to New York to see the parade. The problem with this being that Ted did not get off of work until around 6:00 on Wednesday. No biggie.
I had the car gassed up and ready to roll as soon as the Snowman arrived. We drove all night, playing Barry White’s “Love’s Theme” each time we entered a new state. We heard that song a lot in the stretch between Northern Virginia and Central Jersey. CaliTed and I pulled into our friend’s parents’ house on Long Island somewhere around 8:00 in the morning. We slept until 11:00 or so, and made it in to Manhattan just in time to see Santa Claus cross 37th Street. Then we went for omelettes. I think I’ll watch the Tartan Day parade on TV.
