So, yeah, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. You know about these cats, right? There is so much love to be had here. Maybe my favorite thing at the moment is the drummer’s kit. No disrespect to Keith Moon, but why do drummers seem to think that more drums = better drumming? Unless you are Keith Moon, it probably doesn’t. So I have an inordinate amount of respect for a drummer who is secure enough in his skills to simply rely on a snare, a tom, and a bass drum. Maybe a high-hat.
Simplicity. That’s what I’m driving at. Russ Kunkel, for instance, has plenty of drums and other percussive thingymabobs, but he doesn’t have to use them all at every moment. Most people, however, do not know what to do with so many choices, especially when time is tight. Practice is the only thing that gives us a chance to figure out what tool we need for a given job in a specific moment. That’s the whole point of A Prayer for Owen Meany if you’ve read that.
I had my own little Owen Meany moment today. Took the GREs, I did. Did just fine on them too. They give you the scores just as soon as you finish, at least for the non-essay sections. And yes, there were two essays. Now, I don’t have any real way of knowing how I did on those because, well, they are not graded yet. But I feel pretty darn good about it. Know why? Because I’ve been working it out here for darn near half a decade now. Pushing 1,000 posts. All I can say about that is, “Thanks friends.” You’ve been more help than you’ll ever know.
