You all laughed at me when I said that listening to Prince sing was like going to church. It’s ok. I know when I’m sounding ridiculous. And I know when I’m being ridiculous. Sounding ridiculous and being ridiculous are, however, two different things. One can sound perfectly ordinary while being ridiculous, and one can sound ridiculous while being sublime.
I’d like to think Cousin is being sublime when he sings “Have a Little Faith.” Is it a love song or a gospel song? What, really, is the difference? I’ve heard told that Sam Cooke sang the same songs on Saturday night that he sang on Sunday morning. It’s just the difference of a few words. Who we are calling for, who we want to be connected to, may be human one morning and divine that night. Our need is both ridiculous and sublime.
Ol’ Hossman can tell you all about that. That’s life.
