First of all, let’s remember the context here. It’s 1984 and synth pop rules the airwaves. As much as the kids these days want to idolize A Flock of Seagulls, those hairdos were ridiculous. Same same for the Miami Vice white sport coat with the sleeves rolled up and the stubble shaved just so. Sure, it makes for interestingly themed parties at the tri-Delt house these days, but those of us who lived it might have a different story.
Like how Huey Lewis and the news brought a refreshing blast of retro-rock mixed with British pop into the scene. If you think I may be giving them too much credit, keep in mind that they were Declan McManus’s first backing band. You may know McManus better by his stage name: Elvis Costello. Huey Lewis and the News were the Attractions. So give them their due, especially since their base player has the best look since Dave Gay.
