Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee

Tomorrow, I am planning to get up at 5:00am.  By tomorrow that will be 4:00, but saying that you plan to get up at 4:00 is the type of thing that might garner a person some strange glances.  Getting up at 5:00 sounds noble, like you are a farmer or a baker or a plumber who has a job in another town.  4:00 is when partiers go to bed or morning radio show hosts go to work.  Normal people do not get up at 4:00 in the morning.

Nor do they run 20 miles.  One fifth of that sounds more reasonable.  Mr. Chips probably got up at 5:00 in the morning and ran 4 miles.  There may actually be reference to running this far at that time in the minutes of the last General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA).  Running 20 miles at 4:00 in the morning is something that a Pentecostal would do.  Or an idiot.

A cold idiot at that.  The low for this evening is projected to be in the high 20’s.  Let’s focus on the “high” part of that, shall we?  The lowest temperatures do not occur in the middle of the night, as would make sense to me.  The lowest temperatures occur in the hours furthest from the last time the land received heat radiation from the sun (e.g. the hours right before dawn.)  Of all the dumb things I have done running, this ranks right up there at the top.
